Lee Kasumba is not an average woman. Categorising her would be a great disservice to all that she has accomplished. One thing can be said about her though, as a permanent hip-hop globe trotter, she has gathered so much knowledge and experience that she could be called a hip hop scholar!

Not even thirty years old yet, South African-based-Ugandan-born radio and TV presenter Leslie "Lee" Teresa Nabunya Kasumba has the South African hip-hop industry at her viens. In fact she is one of the most knowledgeable people in the industry when it comes to hip-hop. Kasumba has worked in radio since she was 19, as a DJ and producer for the urban radio station, YFM which happens to be the biggest youth radio station in South Africa. During her nine- year tenure at YFM (which ended in 2008), Kasumba also edited the station’s magazine, the Y-Magazine.

Kasumba, who has a down-to-earth, girl-next-door, breezy personality has done a lot of work for the United Nations, MTV and Channel O. Alongside Uganda hip-hop artist Navio of Klear Kut, Kasumba was one of the only six young Africans who got the chance to get up close and personal with British prime minister, Tony Blair for the “MTV Base Meets Tony Blair” segment, taped during his visit to Johannesburg for the Progressive Governance summit hosted by former South African President, Thabo Mbeki.

Kasumba has also hosted and facilitated the African leg of the Live 8 music concert, presented the Key Note address to the United Nations at the Global African Hip-Hop Summit, facilitated a Quincy Jones panel, she’s presented with a team at UN Habitat in Vancouver on making the inner cities safer through art and check this out: she's also been on a magazine cover with Thabo Mbeki!

Kasumba has in addition interviewed several hip-hop and R&B artists including Talib Kweli, K'naan and the critically acclaimed actor/rapper, Mos Def. The talented Kasumba is also a singer/songwriter and has performed at Alicia Keys’ Banquet and emceed Beyoncé's concert in South Africa. She is involved in children's charities and is the co-founder and owner of Harambe Africa which aims to link African youth together through music, namely hip-hop, to fight xenophobia.

On a personal level Lee has been approached by numerous artists for her writing skills and has featured in and written music for some award-nominated singles. She also does voice overs and is working on a book. There is a possibility that we may be seeing Lee Kasumba's musical side too. And that is just touching the tip of the iceberg on her achievements.
Catch Ms Kasumba doing her thing on the big O, when the second season of Emcee Africa II hits your screens in May 2009.
