June 16
June 1976... Soweto was a steaming pressure cooker that exploded when 20 000 schoolchildren took to the streets. Among them - George Twala, now Ambassador to Rwanda, businessman Thabo Ndabeni and Nelson Mandela Children's Fund CEO Sibongile Mkhabela, all determined to fight oppression. On the other side was Riot Squad member Billie Cox, who still has the police uniform he wore that day. Carte Blanche recounts their stories.
Copper Crooks
Copper thieves are holding the country to ransom, causing billions of rand in damage and repairs to infrastructure. The offenders are well known. Some of them have their lawyers on speed dial, just in case, and heavies on hand for when journalists ask too many questions. Carte Blanche confronts the Copper King.
Ochberg's Orphans
Schindler's Ark, Ochberg's Orphans: In 1921, with civil war raging in Russia and much of Eastern Europe in post-war chaos, Isaac Ochberg, a leader in the Cape Town Jewish community, mounted an heroic rescue. Carte Blanche remembers.
CB20: KE8 One Year On
While bureaucratic bungling and botched hospital procedures in KZN are costing lives and taxpayers billions, one medical unit has seen a drop in mortality rates. It's been just over a year since the opening of the BHP Billiton Paediatric Centre of Excellence, a project that has changed the face of King Edward VIII Hospital in Durban. Made possible by the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust and its sponsors, the Centre has become a beacon of hope for parents, children and doctors from the north of the Eastern Cape to the North Coast.
Miracle at Sea
Brett Archibald, a 50-year-old Capetonian on a surfing trip to Indonesia, fell overboard in the middle of the night of April 17. One man, all alone in the ocean, fighting the elements, fending off sharks and battling to keep his sanity. He prayed he'd be rescued. But after 29 hours treading water most people gave up on him... except his wife, holding a candle light vigil in Cape Town, and some intrepid Australians. Carte Blanche brings you an epic tale of survival.
