Wasteful Spending
The Auditor-General has spoken out about the lack of efficiency in government, saying those employed to do the job seem to be least well-equipped to do it. Terence Nombembe describes the situation as 'dire' and expresses concern about the growing lack of response to his warnings about service delivery and the accuracy of government reports. Carte Blanche looks at some aspects of our ailing public service.

CB20: Bara
Research shows that children of teen mothers are pre-disposed to birth defects for a variety of reasons, including socio-economic ones. And doctors at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital say disorders are becoming more common - so no better time to receive a brand new ICU from the Carte Blanche Making A Difference campaign to treat babies desperately in need of specialised treatment.
Home Buyers Beware
Buying a house is high stress, so many prospective home owners welcomed the protection the Consumer Act was intended to afford them. But it's not that simple: what if a buyer discovers latent defects post purchase? Does the blame lie with the seller or the estate agent - or is it just the buyer's bad luck? Carte Blanche finds out.

Brain Freeze
This common condition is brought on by a rapid increase in blood flow through a major blood vessel in the brain, but less well-known is that if you lower the brain's temperature after a brain injury brought on by cardiac arrest or a stroke, it reduces the chances of brain damage. It's all thanks to a woman called Anna Bagenholm who, while skiing, fell head first into a freezing stream in Norway. Carte Blanche reports a new way to cool the brain that works like a nasal catheter.

Paragliding Africa
Horacio Llorens is one of the most progressive paragliders on the planet - he holds the record for infinity tumbling and is a world champion. He was looking for another challenge, so hooked up with another daredevil adventurer, Thomas de Dorlodot. The two of them set off over Africa - travelling on a literal wing and a proverbial prayer. Carte Blanche caught up with them on the peaks above Cape Town.
