If you've lived there, visited, or just driven through, you'll know the Karoo is a vast, magical place, formed hundreds of millions of years ago. And lurking beneath its ancient low-lying plains is shale - a rock producing natural gas. It's an increasingly important source of energy in the US. Now oil companies are turning their attention to the Karoo. Extracting the gas is done by hydraulic fracturing or 'fracking', about which little is known. Carte Blanche finds out more.
